Reverend Monsignor Gene Edward Gianelli, Class of 1970, died Wednesday, July 29, 2020. We extend our deepest sympathy to Msgr. Gianelli’s family and friends at this time of loss and offer them our prayerful support.
- The Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair will be the principal celebrant of the Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 81 Center Road, Woodbridge, on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, at 11:00 a.m.
- Burial will follow the Mass at All Saints Cemetery, New Haven.
- The Funeral Mass will respect the current state and Archdiocesan guidelines that allow for 25% capacity up to 100 people. Because of this, any members of the clergy planning to attend will need to send a reply to this email by Friday, August 7th indicating that you would like to be present at the Funeral.

Reverend Monsignor Gene Edward Gianelli – Clergy Bio
A native of New Haven, Connecticut, Reverend Monsignor Gene Edward Gianelli began his Catholic education early, attending St. Louis School in New Haven and Notre Dame High School in West Haven. Continuing his education, he undertook seminary studies at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield and then St. Bernard Seminary in Rochester, New York. At the conclusion of his seminary formation, he was ordained to the priesthood by the Most Reverend John F. Whealon at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford on May 23, 1970. Msgr. Gianelli’s early assignments were as an assistant at Corpus Christi Church in Wethersfield and as Secretary to Archbishop Whealon. He then served as a Pastor at Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford before beginning an extended time as Pastor of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Woodbridge. During his time there, Msgr. Gianelli would also serve as a Dean and member of the Presbyteral Council. He would stay in Woodbridge until 2019, being named a Chaplain of His Holiness with the title of Monsignor only a few months following his retirement.
