Position Overview:
St. Agnes Cemetery of St. John Bosco Parish in Branford is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Cemetery Operations Assistant. This individual will support daily cemetery operations, grounds maintenance, and customer service functions, ensuring the respectful and smooth functioning of the cemetery grounds. The ideal candidate will demonstrate compassion, reliability, and a strong work ethic, supporting the Catholic mission of St. John Bosco Parish.
Primary Responsibilities:
Cemetery Operations:
- Prepare grave sites for burials
- Assist with interments
- Assist families and funeral directors during burials with professionalism and compassion.
Grounds Maintenance:
- Mow lawns, trim around monuments, and maintain landscaping.
- Remove trash and debris from the cemetery grounds.
- Clear snow and ice from walkways and access roads; apply salt/sand as needed.
- Raise sunken markers, seed fresh graves, etc.
- Plow St. Mary Church parking lot & clear walkways, church entrances, etc. as necessary.
General Duties:
- Operate equipment such as mowers, snow blowers, leaf blowers, and other small machinery.
- Perform basic maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.
- Report maintenance and safety issues to Cemetery Operations Manager.
Tools & Equipment Operated:
- Lawn mowers, trimmers, snow blowers, hand tools, rakes, shovels, lifting devices.
Qualifications:
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
- Ability to work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
- General knowledge of landscaping, grounds maintenance, and basic cemetery operations.
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact compassionately with grieving families.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Attention to detail and respect for cemetery environment and traditions.
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Prior experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or cemetery operations preferred.
Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license required.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry items up to 75 lbs.
- Frequent bending, stooping, walking, kneeling, standing, and lifting.
- Ability to climb ladders and work at different terrain levels.
- Regular exposure to outdoor weather, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
Schedule:
- Full-time, 40 hours per week.
- Availability for weekend work to support funeral services and seasonal needs.
