Position Overview:
St. John Bosco Parish in Branford is seeking a dependable and self-motivated Custodian to provide custodial and light maintenance support across parish facilities including the church, parish center, offices, and surrounding grounds. The ideal candidate will ensure the cleanliness, safety, and general upkeep of parish property while supporting the parish mission and liturgical life.
Primary Responsibilities:
Church:
- Open and secure church daily; maintain clean and safe conditions.
- Monitor HVAC operation and report issues to Facilities Manager.
- Clean and restock bathrooms: soap, toilet paper, towels, air fresheners.
- Mop floors, flush drains, vacuum rugs and carpets; maintain hand sanitizers.
- Handle minor plumbing issues and other maintenance needs.
- Replace lightbulbs; patch and paint walls as needed.
- Set up liturgical décor (e.g., reredos tapestries) for special seasons.
- Keep bulletin tables/racks stocked.
- Perform monthly, semiannual, or annual janitorial projects (floor waxing, carpet cleaning, etc.).
Grounds:
- Mow lawns, weed flower beds, pick up litter, and maintain orderly appearance.
- Clear snow and ice from sidewalks and entrances; apply sand/salt.
- Maintain flowerbeds and re-seed lawn areas as needed.
Parish Center & Offices:
- Empty trash receptacles and clean restrooms and kitchens daily.
- Perform general cleaning and maintenance tasks.
- Patch and paint walls as needed.
Parish Hall:
- Set up and take down tables, chairs, and movable walls for events (may require multiple setups per day).
- Clean all flooring surfaces and empty trash regularly.
- Secure building after final event each day.
- Replace lightbulbs and perform touch-up painting as needed.
Tools & Equipment Operated:
- Lawn mowers, trimmers, snow blowers, rakes, shovels, pruning tools, chain saws, ladders, floor polishers.
Qualifications:
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
- Proficient janitorial skills and neat painting ability.
- Ability to work independently and manage routine without supervision.
- Familiarity with cleaning products and safe handling procedures.
- Ability to adapt to scheduling changes and multitask.
- Good physical coordination and manual dexterity.
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Prior custodial/janitorial experience strongly preferred.
Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license required.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
- Ability to lift and move items up to 75 lbs.
- Frequent bending, stooping, walking, standing, climbing.
- Must be able to climb ladders up to 10 feet.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, temperature fluctuations, and outdoor conditions.
Schedule:
- Evening and weekend availability required to support parish functions and Mass schedules.
