Reverend Francis Xavier Callahan, Class of 1949, died Wednesday, January 29, 2020.  We extend our deepest sympathy to Fr. Callahan’s family and friends at this time of sorrow and offer them our prayerful support.

A Parish Mass in remembrance of Fr. Callahan will be celebrated at St. Agnes Church (of Precious Blood Parish), 400 Merwin Avenue, Milford on Monday, February 3, 2020, at 7:30 p.m. A Wake will be held in the church prior to the Mass.

The Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair will be the principal celebrant of the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Agnes Church on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, Branford.

Born in East Haven, Connecticut, Reverend Francis Xavier Callahan did his philosophy studies at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield and completed his seminary formation at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained to the priesthood by the Most Reverend Henry J. O’Brien at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford on May 26, 1949. Fr. Callahan’s first assignment was at St. Patrick Church in Mystic. He would later serve as an assistant at St. Joseph Church in Bristol, chaplain at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, and co-pastor at St. Aedan Church in New Haven. Beginning in 1983, Fr. Callahan was assigned to St. Agnes Church in Woodmont, and he would serve there as pastor until his retirement.
